Folding@home - Forgotten Folding

Postby Klimax » February 10th, 2017, 4:55 pm

https://folding.stanford.edu/

Perhaps somebody already heared about this project or even participated. In short, folding@home means using your computing power to fold virtual proteins to help fighting diseases, e.g. cancer, alzheimer. More informations can be found on the linked page. ;)

At this point I thought it would be interesting to know how much the fh2-gamers could do with their machines. At least one player - Alubat - has a high potential with his dual gpu setup. since it can raise your powerbill a little, depending on your setup, not everyone ist interested. therefore f@h offers optionally setting up power mode from low to medium to full. currently my rig is running full mode (ok maybe measure power consumptin later on  ).

to see the performance in total I started the team Forgotten Folding (Team 232504)
everybody is invited to join! *looking towards ALubat*

> if you are serious into folding I recommend getting a PassKey for bonus points.
for any questions, the configuration guide is quite helpful.

cheers

Been using pc as radiator for the last couple of hours. My cpu gets 74 & Gpus 45 celcius with max fan speeds when folding at Max.
I guess my pc uses at least 500Watts when running cpu 4.5 ghz + (2xGtx1080 Gpu at 2088Mhz + 5000Mhz vram)

kwh is @,27€ currently. with a peak load of 350 watts it's definitely not a 24/7 project to me, but I keep it up until it's april or so. later on heat could become a problem. ;) after 4 hours of folding, bot cpu and gpu maxed out cpu sits at 55°C and gpu at 75°C.
not bad for basic air cooling only:

how many ppd do you reach? basically your ppd should be more then doubled with 1080^sli vs single 1070 with 570k ppd.

Think I tried folding for 10h or so at Max utilization. Pc sounds like a jumbojet when running fans at 90%. Not a sound I like.
ppd : How can I see this correct. Looks like I can only see something usefull when a cpu or gpu reaches 100% and then number changes again when it restarts ( in web control ) ?
In Fah control I see a points Per Day changing bettween 154000-155500 while folding

I wonder if my win 10 is better or worse than my win 7 partition. I get better 3d mark and passmark results in win 7.
Only tried to fold in win 7 so far

I could Fold, Seti or farm bitcoin, but I didnt build pc for that purpose. But its fun to try :-)

So I guess It will take some time, just like fh2 to get into the top 100 rank :-)
Some nice teams in the chart

Good to see that you guys are doing this, too!

Image

I've been a member of the ComputerBase-HardwareLuxx team (team ID 70911, contributing as "I_ODIUM_I")
for several years now.

Whenever my desktop PC is down- or uploading big files, say new CMP builds onto our servers or when it is doing
maintenance stuff like malware scanning or defragmenting over night, I keep Folding@home running on it to do
something useful with all the idling computing power.

My laptop is running basically 24/7 (mail, communications programmes, etc.).
Whenever I am not working on it, it is running F@H, too.

Keep up the folding! ;)
Best Regards / MfG
